Why Write My Book?

On June 29th, my birthday, I’m releasing my first book, Becoming Mister Ross.

But why did I start writing it in the first place?

I was counseling at a group practice when the pandemic hit, and spent a year there, not thinking much about my career or future at the time. I think all of us were trying to get through the day unscathed. But I started writing, in part to remember the Wellness group I had ran at my previous job. I loved that group and I found the content valuable.

What ended up happening was a transition from helping others build a healthy lifestyle to letting others know more about me.

This was quite the transition.

A couple of excerpts from Becoming Mister Ross offer clues to my reasoning:

I’m not quite sure what inspired me to write this book, but it became about helping others, and, in doing that, it is deeply personal. At times it was  painful to recall memories I’d rather forget. The idea of a stranger reading about some of the worst times in my life was scary and left me feeling vulnerable. I procrastinated often, not writing for weeks or months at a time.  Sometimes I’d receive confirmation from those around me — I’m sure through divine intervention — to write more.

This book is written for the one, analogous to how God leaves the ninety-nine sheep to

find the one lost member of the flock. There is much to gain on the journey of personal

growth. Showing up, such as through reading a book like this, creates the opportunity for

optimism, insight, and change for oneself. Connection to another is the impetus for

change.

May this book find its way to a therapist, client, student, or concerned loved one who

needs to hear my story and may experience the divine intervention that this book could

hopefully offer.

Overall, my reasons are twofold - to help people see that therapists are people too and to help those with mental health issues, especially OCD, know that they are not alone.

As the book release date grows closer, I can’t help but get sidetracked by other external reasons for the book - a check off the dream list, the notion of status, the potential for fame, leverage for my businesses, and passive income. But these are outcomes of writing, many of which outside of my control. Good outcomes. Yet, they are not purpose.

As a writer, I have to balance both the purpose and the outcomes. All purpose and I may forget about logistical issues like marketing. All outcomes and I may lose track of why I’m even at this place in the journey. I have the opportunity to make connections and potentially help people grow, connect, and heal.

You too may be struggling with balancing your purpose with outcomes. Be aware of your decisions and where you’re going. Is this where you wanted to go? And if not, how do you change direction?
